My Transcatalunya 2010 is over and finished!!! My goal was to finish in less than 12h (Silver category). I ended in 11h 20min!!! So I now feel terribly happy and satisfied. This winter has been terrible training everyday, even when raining, snowing, winding to my face... but the result couldn't be better than this! Goal accomplsihed!!! :-)
Let me explain the race itself...
I went with my friends Vicens and Manel to the briefing of the race at 19,00pm and we had dinner at 20,00pm and go to sleep after final bike settings.
On Sunday, we woke up at 4,00am and had breakfast. When taking my bike, the front tire was almost flat..shit! But I preferred to pump it up instead of installing an inner tube and pump it during the ride.
Depart was at 5,00am at night at 1400m and it was so nice to see the 400 riders climbing to La Masella ski resort wit htheir lights on. Soon at 6,00am the morning was lightening our faces and it was easier to read the roadbooks and follow the other riders up to Coll de Pal (2100m). Vicens did not feel very good with his stomach and Manel stayed with him, so I decided to go on my own and, if things got worse, I would wait for them somewhere beyond...
Instead, I felt terribly well descending to Pobla de Lillet (800m) and passed Control 1 in good position (top100). Then, we climbed the hardest trail of the day up from La Pobla to somewhere around 1400m high and started to rain with terrible thunderstorms and head wind. I reached Control 2 and had something to eat.
On the second downhill of the day, I began to advance some other riders and I left behind the group that I climbed with before. We arrived to the Cobert del Puigcercós and took the road down to Sta Maria de Merlès (500m) to Control 3. I decided to grease my chain and eat some pasta before some of the steadious sections of the race. It was almost km85 and still along ride before Barcelona.
Control 4, 5 and 6 where disposed within some short but intense climbs that killed lots of riders, including me... Climbing to Sant Llorenç Savall I experienced one of the worst sensations ever in my life. The day was warm, but I felt so cold in my arms and my stomach was empty/cold and ready to throw...but this even got worst...my heart rate monitor stated only 118bpm when climbing!!! I could not even increase higher than 122bpm!!! So I felt really scared...after 10min on a technical section I reached 143bpm, so I felt more relaxed after that...bufff...
Reaching Control 7 in Castellar del Vallès started to pour again and it did not finish raining until Barcelona. The paths were muddy and I reached another group in a technical section which accompanied me until the end. My roadbook was soaked and I had to rely on their guide skills. We arrived together to Control 8 and timing, finishing within the top80 position in 11h20min!!! Goal accomplished!!! Silver category and a state of satisfaction that I have never felt before when crossing the finish line in Barcelona Forum Beach!!! 196km after my depart from the heart of Pyrinees mountains!!! Amazing!!!
Thank you Lucia for picking me up in Barcelona!
